Description
THE 39 STEPS Directed by Alfred Hitchcock (1935),(16mm)           Robert Donat plays an innocent individual who is inadvertently drawn into a spy ring’s activities. He ends up in Scotland where a mysterious laird who promises to help him turns out to be the spymaster. His co-star in the exciting adventure is the beautiful Madeleine Carroll. This film is most probably the one which established Hitchcock as a master of suspense, and caused him to be brought to the United States, where his career went into high gear.       An innocent bystander enters a theater where the main attraction is Mr. Memory, a man who supposedly can answer any question of fact.  After being introduced by the manager (Picture #2), he answers several questions from the audience (Picture #3), including one by Robert Donat (Picture #4).  As Mr. Memory is about to reply to another question (Picture #5), a shot rings out and the panicked audience makes a rush for the exits. Our hero is accosted by a beautiful woman who asks him to escort her away, and they end up at his lodgings (Picture #6). He offers her a drink (Picture #7), and they go to sleep (separately!).  He is awakened the next morning, when she staggers into his room with a knife in her back, clutching a piece of paper in her hand.    Reading it, he realizes it contains a clue to the murder which causes him to go to Scotland to try to find the killer, since he knows he will be accused of the murder.   Making his way onto a train (Picture #8), he sees police who are seeking the murderer, so he thrusts himself into a compartment and onto an astonished and frightened passenger,  hoping to appear to be making love to her (Madeleine Carroll, Picture #9), as the police make their way past the compartment.      Making his way to Scotland he penetrates to the core of the spy ring, all the while being handcuffed to the beautiful Madeleine.  The exciting ending brings him back to the theater where Mr. Memory dies while revealing the spy system, called the 39 STEPS             The film is in excellent physical condition.
