Description
Incredibly rare original vintage lobby photo from the original German release in 1922 of the classic silent horror film Nosferatu directed by F.W.Murnau. As is well known, the film was an unauthorised version of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula and the film quckly became involved in legal problems. The film was produced by Prana-Film GmbH and would be the only film that the company would ever produce before declaring bankruptcy after Bram Stoker's estate, acting for his widow Florence, sued for copyright infringement and won. The court ordered that all prints be destroyed but fortunately prints survived. The result was that the film was not shown widely for many years. It was not shown in America until 1929. The photo measures 8.2"x10.45" and the sides are slightly uneven as the borders have all been slightly trimmed. It appears that it is mainly the white borders which are missing as the lettering imprinted along the bottom is far enough from the bottom edge to indicate that barely any of the actual image is missing. The left hand bottom reads "Nosferatu 10" indicating that it is photo number ten of the display photos produced. The right hand bottom has the credit "Prana-Film." The photo is of the Jonathan Harker character in an early scene from the film. He was played by Gustav von Wangenheim (with the character's name changed to Hutter). The lobby photo is printed on double weight paper and other than some very small tack holes at each corner - which are not very evident - the photo is in very good condition with excellent clarity and sharpness in the image. The back has a stamp from the Czechoslovakian distributor in Prague but no other markings. But this is definitely an original German lobby photo and likely to be one of very few genuinely original lobby cards to have survived from this film.If you want to see more detailed scans of the image, please contact me and I can email them to you. Will be posted by Priority Registered Mail.
